Chatham Town 0-4 Walton Casuals

Monday 26th February 2007

With both teams only three points clear of the drop zone at the start, this was an important “6 pointer” on Saturday, writes Neil Sanders.

The visitors adapted better to the heavy pitch conditions and scored the opening goal after 19 minutes.

Chatham conceded possession after a promising attack and Anthony Gale’s long clearance put Craig Carley clear to lob Miroslav Oravec from the edge of the 18 yard box.

Casuals then doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, when Michael Carpenter beat the Chats keeper to the ball out on the left, and pulled it back for Gale to lift it over the covering defenders and into the roof of the net.

Chatham’s best effort of the half came from a Ross Finn volley, following a good run by Danny White, but Walton keeper Matt Reed was equal to the task.

Chats started the second half better and went close through a Sam Groombridge header and a long range shot from Tom Binks.

However, the result was really put beyond doubt when Carpenter finished from close range after a good run down the left by Michael Cobden after 54 minutes.

Rob Denness and Steve Best both forced decent saves from the Casuals keeper late on, but the highlight of the second half was Walton’s fourth goal.

Billy Mead found Scott Harris, who created enough space to curl a left foot shot beyond Oravec with 10 minutes remaining.

Chatham now drop below the visitors and have a tough trip to third placed Hastings United on Tuesday night.

Injuries are certainly not helping their cause either with first choice keeper John Whitehouse and Drew Watkins still struggling, Danny Larkin out for several weeks and now top scorer Rob Denness picking up a suspected broken toe.

Chatham Town: Oravec, Binks, White (Govey 45), Groombridge, Goodger, Best, Smith, Brooks (Walker 45), McKenna, Denness, Finn (Botterill 63). Subs: Lyons, Winter-Nolan.

Chatham Town entertained Dover Athletic in the Kent Senior Cup last Tuesday night and gave a first team debut to a new signing in Czech keeper Miroslav Horovic, writes Neil Sanders.

Tyrone Walker and Craig Govey also came into the starting line for the first time during their
2-0 defeat

The visitors started well and took the lead after 19 minutes. A long clearance from keeper Darren Smith found Bradley Spice on the run and he was able to lob the advancing Horovic from just outside the 18 yard box.

Chats then lost Danny Larkin five minutes later, to what appears to be a torn hamstring which could keep him out of action for a few weeks.

Chatham were inches away from equalising just before half time when efforts from a corner were twice scrambled off the line, before Dover broke quickly with Spice forcing a decent save from Horovic.

Dover made it 2-0 just after the break when a right wing cross from Lee Spiller was headed home at the far post by Jimmy Dryden.

A good move involving Tyran James and Rob Denness then set up Jim Lyons, but his powerful drive was charged down.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men when Liam Quinn was sent off for what could perhaps best be described as threatening behaviour.

Two further yellows cards were shown to each side during the second half.

In the closing minutes, Darren Smith came close to pulling one back for Chatham when his 20 yard shot flew just wide after a good build up move but the final score seemed a fair result in the end.

Chatham: Horovic, Binks, Finn (Phillips 60), Larkin (Groombridge 23), Goodger, Lyons, Smith, Watkins (James 49), Walker, Denness, Govey. Subs: McKenna, King.
