We have been trying to build a side this summer that will give everything for me and the club throughout the whole season and not just players that want to use us as a stepping stone, says Chatham Town boss Paul Piggott

CHATHAM TOWN boss Paul Piggott says there is a buzz around the place despite suffering relegation at the end of last season.

Kevin Hake has taken over as the new chairman at Maidstone Road and he has put in the funds to improve the playing surface and floodlights and there is optimism ahead of their Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division opener tomorrow.

Piggott takes his side to Sevenoaks Town, a side that enjoyed their greatest ever season under Micky Collins, finishing in third-place in the table and won the Macron Southern Counties East Football League Challenge Shield for the first time.

“Tomorrow we travel to Sevenoaks, which will be a tough encounter as Micky will have a decent side together, looking to challenge again this season and on their new 3G playing surface in itself will bring its own spin on the game,” said Piggott.

“We have been trying to build a side this summer that will give everything for me and the club throughout the whole season and not just players that want to use us as a stepping stone.

“After last season’s disappointing end the one thing we need at Chatham Town is stability.  But for a club that was relegated it has a buzz around the place and we need to take that into Saturday afternoon’s and get results.”

Chatham Town opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Littlehampton Town in The FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round last Saturday.

The replay was washed out on Wednesday night and will try again next Wednesday to see which club will host Eastbourne United in the Preliminary Round next Saturday, 19 August.

“Our game against Littlehampton last Saturday was one I was glad to get underway,” said Piggott.

“We looked nervous and ball shy in the first half but once we got that out of the way we did a lot better in the second half and probably should have won the tie.”
