It is up to the players to show us what they can do and if they perform well they will be asked to sign, says Chatham Town boss Tony Beckingham

CHATHAM TOWN manager Tony Beckingham says he will give his trialists a fair crack of the whip before making the cut next week.

Beckingham takes charge of his first Chatham Town game on Saturday when he takes his side to Chislehurst to play Glebe.

Glebe finished in third-place in the Kent Invicta League last season and revealed that they had sacked manager Simon Copley and his assistant Ian Varley before the pair won both the London Senior Trophy and Kent Invicta League Challenge Trophy after beating Tooting Bec and Sutton Athletic respectively.

Glebe have appointed Adam Woodward, who was a part of the management team at Ryman League Division One North side Phoenix Sports.

Glebe have already played one pre-season game and defeated higher-league opposition in the shape of Erith Town 3-0 last weekend.

Chatham Town completed their Ryman League Division One South campaign in the bottom six last season and Beckingham is looking forward to taking his side to Foxbury Avenue.

“Good game to start with,” said Beckingham.

“I have a long standing football relationship with Woody and also some of his players have played for me in the past so I’m looking forward to seeing them all again.

“It’s going to be a test as they’re probably the favourites to win their league next season and I wouldn’t disagree with that.

“Pre-season has started well, good numbers but also the right quality of player.  There’s a good mix of old and new but we will be looking at reducing numbers by the end of next week after Saturday and Tuesday.

“Once the squad has taken shape I will be able to update you with an in-depth list of players but it is too early to do that right now.

“We want to give everyone a fair crack at it but unfortunately we can’t keep everyone and some people will be disappointed.

“It is up to the players to show us what they can do and if they perform well they will be asked to sign.”
