Canterbury City joint-boss Ben Smith: Morale is at a season high at the moment and you can see that the squad are enjoying their football and playing for each other

CANTERBURY CITY joint-manager Ben Smith says morale is at the highest going into their last three games of the season.

The club are sitting in the top eight in the Southern Counties East Football League table after losing 3-2 at Erith & Belvedere last weekend and thrashing Holmesdale 6-0 at home in midweek.

“Morale is at a season high at the moment and you can see that the squad are enjoying their football and playing for each other,” said Smith.

“We were disappointing in the first half against Erith & Belvedere last Saturday but to be fair to them they were clinical and despite dominating the second half it was too little too late.

“I have said a few weeks ago that game would be our toughest remaining and it proved to be right.  They are a much better side than the table will tell you!

“It was important to bounce back midweek against Holmesdale and we felt like we owed them one for the frustrating draw against them away and we certainly put that to bed.

“They were very lucky not to have conceded more than six with the woodwork helping them out on numerous occasions.

“Earlier in the season I doubt we would have put that many in because we lacked bit of belief that we could be ruthless.  They are a very young group and the signs are there that they are adding a maturity to their game, which bodes well for the future.”

Erith Town are the visitors to Homelands Stadium tomorrow. Martin and Joe Ford’s side are in the bottom four and have failed to win in 16 outings.

Smith said: “Erith Town will be a good challenge for us tomorrow, especially defensively as they have some good quality going forward. The last game was an exciting 3-3 and I would expect the same tomorrow as we’ll have a go and they’ll be keen to get a win having dropped right down the table.”
