I’ve always said that this season would be full of ups and downs and where we finish this season will be down to how we handle the disappointments, says Canterbury City joint-boss Ben Smith

CANTERBURY CITY joint-manager Ben Smith says his side are having a season of ups and downs.

The Ashford-based club sit in the top eight in the Southern Counties East Football League, having collected eight wins, two draws and nine defeats on 26 points.

There are 13 clubs separated by only 9 points, with fifth-placed Lordswood siting on 29 points, while third-from-bottom Croydon have 20 points on the board.

Canterbury City defeated Crowborough Athletic 3-1 last weekend and Smith said: “It was a bit of a relief to get the win last week against Crowborough to stop the little rut we had got into.

“I’ve always said that this season would be full of ups and downs and where we finish this season will be down to how we handle the disappointments.

“I think we’ve played better and lost games to be honest but I thought the players showed great character to come from behind and we were fairly comfortable in the end.

“The squad had a good session with Darren Beale in the week so the confidence has had a good boost.”

Fisher arrive at Homelands Stadium struggling in the bottom two, having collected five wins, three draws and 11 defeats in the league this season.

“Fisher will present us with some different challenges tomorrow but we just need to worry about delivering a strong performance ourselves,” said Smith.

“It will be good to welcome a few players back from holidays and suspension which gives us a few more options during the game and also means I won’t have to put myself on the bench again!

“The players know a win tomorrow will put pressure on those around us to put some points on the board to stay with us so hopefully we can get the three points.”
