Canterbury City joint-boss Ben Smith: We're continuing to build a squad capable of challenging in the future

Friday 01st January 2016

CANTERBURY CITY joint-manager Ben Smith says he wants to build a side challenging for honours in the future.

Canterbury City go into the New Year sitting in ninth-place in the Southern Counties East Football League table on 23 points from 18 games.

They welcome Crowborough Athletic to Homelands Stadium tomorrow, a side that defeated Sevenoaks Town 3-1 on Boxing Day and are one place above them.

“We’ve been eager for this game to come around as we feel a bit hard done by with our defeats to Cray Valley and Ashford United,” said Smith, ahead of the middle of the table battle.

“Having said that, I sound like a broken record with those sort of comments and it’s time for my players to take a little bit more responsibility and make our own luck, which I’m fully confident we have the personnel to do.

“The addition of ex Whitstable Town forward Sam Callender will hopefully add some firepower in order to do this.

“Crowborough are on a decent run so it will be a tough game tomorrow.

“The top three aside, I think anyone can beat anyone in this league, the standard is a lot better than what I observed from a few games last season so unless we perform to our potential we can’t expect to take points in this league.

“In terms of aims for 2016 it’s two part really. Firstly, the new stadium is obviously high on the club’s agenda and we should see some reward to the board’s hard work.

“Additionally it’s continuing to build a squad capable of challenging in the future which we are certainly on the way to doing that.”

Despite the rain in Kent today, this game will go ahead because of the artificial pitch at Homelands Stadium.
