Bromley boss Neil Smith signs Zavon Hines: It's a fantastic bit of business for the club

BROMLEY manager Neil Smith has pulled off another transfer coup by signing former Chesterfield winger Zavon Hines, 29.

The former Maidstone United winger/striker impressed for Chesterfield when Hines snatched a last minute penalty to equalise for Martin Allen’s side when the two sides met up in Derbyshire on 27 November.

After that game, Smith told this website: “I thought Zavon Hines was outstanding today. I thought he was the highlight of their team.  When you come near him you always worry what he can do.”

A Chesterfield statement said that Hines’ contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

“Due to family issues, the player expressed a desire to continue his career at a club closer to his London home.

“It was therefore agreed that his contract would be terminated at no cost to the club.”

Smith and the Bromley board acted swiftly and have snapped up Hines, who joins Jonathan James Hooper (a striker on loan from Grimsby Town) and winger Luke Coulson (Ebbsfleet United) at Hayes Lane this week as the club bid to pull away from relegation trouble in the Vanarama National League.

Smith told www.bromleyfc.co.uk: “It’s been a very busy week on all fronts. It’s a fantastic bit of business for the club and there’s been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get these deals done.

“Zavon is a top-quality player with the experience we need and did very well playing against us last week.”

Bromley’s leading goalscorer this season is holding midfielder Frankie Sutherland whose seven goals have all come from the penalty spot.

The Ravens are in 18th place in the table with 24 points from 22 games – four points clear of the relegation zone and Smith takes his side to seventh-placed Gateshead tomorrow.
