Borough sign South African Premier League star - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Wednesday 30th August 2006
Greenwich Borough will be looking to get back to winning ways at the Mile End Stadium where they face Sporting Bengal United tonight, writes Stephen McCartney.

Borough secretary Barry Feist hopes his club can get the victory to climb up seven places into fourth – after conceding top spot over the Bank Holiday weekend.

In an EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with www.kentishfootball.co.uk Mr Feist said: "We have been disappointed with our last two results.

"Our second-half performance at home to VCD should have at the very least earnt us a point and by Martin Ford's own admission 'we gave them a fright'.

Then on Saturday, after being on top of the game for 80 minutes, we went sloppy at the back and allowed Faversham to score two well taken but soft goals."

However, Borough are still trying out various players. "We have a big squad and are still looking for the right combination of players,” said Mr Feist.

“Against Faversham we called up some reserve team players and the new signings also did very well.

"I have been very impressed with the attitude of striker Harbingi Grant. He was struggling a bit with fitness before the start of the season and found himself in the reserves, which he was very disappointed about.

“Peter Garland and I spoke to him about that and both of us told him that he would be given his chance. He then went on to score three goals in four reserve team friendlies and that earnt him a call up to the first team against Faversham"

'Bingi' sat on the bench for 81 minutes before coming on to replace Huseyin Budak and within five minutes of his debut scored Borough's equaliser.

Borough have hit the net in each of their four games this season. However, there is some concern by club officials that they are not scoring enough.

"We had at least a dozen chances to score on Saturday but only got one. We are strong at the back and our midfield work very hard but we are lacking the killer finish in front of goal," said boss Peter Garland.

Borough's other debutant's on Saturday were midfielders Nicholas Koutsoudis and Steven Wade.

Koutsoudis comes to the club with very good credentials as he has played in the Castle Premiership League in South Africa with University side Bidvest Wits. While Steven Wade is no stranger to the Kent League.

Mr Feist added: "Nicholas signed forms with us last week after impressing the management in a friendly with South London Alliance outfit Johnson & Phillips and was thrown straight into the first eleven against Faversham."

Greenwich Borough, meanwhile, have suspensions coming up in the next few weeks, and they'lll be without top-scorer Dave Hassett and Peter Garland  for one match  and George Jones sits out four games.

Mr Feist revealed: "We will be missing a few key players in the next few weeks or so and positions will be up for grabs, if they impress the management then they will keep their place.”
