Beckenham Town pull off Sheringham signing

Wednesday 09th September 2009
BECKENHAM TOWN chairman Chris McCarthy has yesterday afternoon pulled off the club's biggest ever signing - Teddy Sheringham, writes Stephen McCartney.

The timing of Sheringham's registration qualifies him to play for Beckenham Town's FA Carlsberg Vase tie against Banstead Athletic at Eden Park Avenue on Saturday, 19th September.

The 43-year-old footballing legend missed the club’s 6-1 home win over Wealden in the first qualifying round due to his England television commitments at the weekend.

Essex based Sheringham is included in Beckenham's squad for Saturday's Bulmers Cider Kent League game at Bromley based side Holmesdale, although at present there is no confirmation from the club as to when the former England and Manchester United star is likely to make his debut.

However, the Banstead Athletic FA Vase tie looks to be the more likely match  when he does come out of retirement - and the Kent club can expect to attract their largest competitive attendance to their modest ground.

Sheringham played at Eden Park Avenue - and scored a hat-trick -  in a fund raising game alongside his son Charlie (who was Welling United's leading goalscorer last season before moving to their Blue Square South rivals Bishop's Stortford) and a host of other football stars in the summer, including Jamie Rednapp, Darren Anderton, Tony Cascariono and rugby legend Matt Dawson.

Chairman Mr McCarthy, who is close friends with both Cascarino and Sheringham and has followed their football careers closely, was naturally delighted with his transfer coup.

"We were all thrilled on Saturday that Teddy took the time out to phone at half-time to see how we were getting on in our Vase tie against Wealden,” he told www.beckenhamtownfc.co.uk.

"It's a great time for the club and the local community."
