ASHFORD UNITED have confirmed that record-breaking striker Stuart Zanone has signed a new contract to stay with the club.

The 29-year-old goal-machine scored a record-breaking 47 goals for the club as Paul Chambers’ side completed their Southern Counties East Football League campaign as runners-up to Phoenix Sports.

Zanone, who commutes from Harlow in Essex, has opted to stay at Homelands Stadium – where he will ply his trade on a 3G pitch next season - after turning down offers from higher league clubs.

Ashford United revealed that the striker has received offers from unnamed National League South clubs but has opted to stay put.

“Despite Stuart receiving several tempting offers to join other clubs, some as much as three leagues higher than Ashford, he has today signed on the dotted line for the club,” said a club statement, posted on the club’s website.

“The reasons Stuart quoted as to why he has signed include the fact that he has thoroughly enjoyed his time with us and accepts that the offers from elsewhere were tempting offers but with Ashford moving forward and the playing squad set to remain much as last season with a few further additions to improve the service given to Stuart his mind was made up.

“Ashford United FC welcome the commitment shown by Stuart to a club that is certainly set to try to better the previous two season’s second place in the SCEFL, a league that is renowned as being one of the hardest leagues in non-league football to gain promotion from.”
