Ashford Town 2-2 Corinthian Casuals

Monday 23rd October 2006
Ashford Town produced a spirited second half performance to fight back from two goals down to grab a point against bottom of the table
Corinthian-Casuals, writes Will Sun.

In Matt Carruthers’s returning game after signing from Folkestone Invicta,
the striker was kept quiet by a resilient defence kept under lock and key by
Chris Horwood.

For the second game running the Nuts and Bolts started with a 4-3-3
formation, with Coleman as the focal point of the attack, supported by
Carruthers and Joby Thorogood, the only outfield player who has started all
14 games for the Town season.

Ian Ross dropped to the bench to be replaced by Tom Adlington at left back, who the management sufficiently deemed to have recovered from a head injury sustained in the FA Trophy loss to Waltham Forest.

But all Ashford’s pre-match plans were soon thrown out the window when Kane Sergeant put the visitors into the lead with just eight minutes gone, as he volleyed in Luke Gay’s cross after a wonderful flowing move.

On-loan Tonbridge utility player Drew Watkins stung the hands of Colin
Harris moments later, but the Casuals continue to press and forced a
defensive mistake just after the half hour mark.

Tom Adlington and Simon Overland were caught in a nightmare mix-up at the back to gift the Casuals a second, as the on-loan Daggers keeper was caught out of his goal to leave Adlington’s back pass to roll into an empty net.

Although the half time Tim Thorogood team talk certainly motivated the Ashford players.

Just four minutes into the second half Kenny Jarrett-Elliott’s free kick was
headed at the back post by Marc Cumberbacth, and after Colin Harris had made a fingertip save from Matt Carruthers, Dan Tanner got the final touch to half the Casuals’ lead.

Luke Coleman could have levelled proceedings but for a great save from
Harris, before substitute George Fenwick rose to head Anthony Allman’s
right-footed corner in with six minutes left to give Ashford Town a share of the spoils.

Ashford Town: Simon Overland, Tom Adlington, Drew Watkins, Dan Tanner, Marc Cumberbatch, Anthony Allman, Joby Thorogood, Simon Glover, Matt Carruthers, Luke Coleman (Adam O'Neill 78), Kenny Jarrett-Elliott (Fenwick 67).
