Doncaster Rovers sign Max Watters from Ashford United: When I first saw Max last season, I knew he was a special talent. He has all the attributes needed to make it as a pro footballer

DONCASTER ROVERS have signed striker Max Watters, 19, on a two-year deal from Bostik South East Division side Ashford United, following in the footsteps of former Hythe Town hit-man Alfie May.

“I’m over the moon. It’s always been an aim of mine to try and get a contract in the EFL so now it’s about working hard to keep improving,” Watters told www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk.

“It’s such a friendly club and when I came here on trial they couldn’t have done anymore for me, the squad were really welcoming from my first day.

“I noticed the manager likes to give young players a chance, hopefully I’ve made my mark with the coaching staff to show them what I’m capable of.”

Watters told www.ashfordunitedfc.com: “Thank you to everyone at Ashford United, especially Jason Whitmore for giving me the opportunity to play week-in-week-out.  Also to the fans for their fantastic support.  I’d like to wish Ashford Untied great success for next season and beyond.”

Watters scored eight goals for Ashford United overall in 25 starts for the club. He signed for the club on 7 September 2017 and made his debut two days later against Molesey.

His last appearance for the club came on 20 January 2018, when he picked up an injury in the seventh minute in a home game against Hythe Town.

Jason Whitmore, who signed Watters for the Kent club, said: “When I first saw Max last season, I knew he was a special talent. He has all the attributes needed to make it as a pro footballer. This will be a perfect move for him to continue his development.”

The Nuts & Bolts finished in the bottom four in the Bostik South Division last season with 38 points from their 46 games.

Former Millwall ace Gary Alexander, who was Whitmore’s assistant, has taken over as manager.
