Are Stones fans the most devoted in Kent?

Thursday 19th April 2007

Maidstone United’s supporters are yet again taking on impressive feats in aid of their ground fund, this time with four brave supporters cycling from Oxford to the clubs ‘home’ ground in Sittingbourne, writes Sam Bunn.

Their trip will spread over Friday and Saturday, as the supporters aim to get to Bourne Park before kick off in the Stones’ decisive match against Kingstonian.

The cyclists will also pass by many Football and Non-League stadiums during their 113 mile trip, hoping to stop at grounds ranging from Stamford Bridge to Maidenhead United’s York Road ground.

One of the supporters making the journey, John Gooch, is looking forward to the trip.

He said: "It is certainly going to be tough but we’ve all been training hard so we should be able to complete the ride."

He is also chuffed with the amount been donated by fans so far, adding: "We have already raised over £1000, which I think is an excellent achievement considering the majority of people donated cash to the lads who walked down to Dover in February.

"Hopefully we may even be able to raise more funds at Bourne Park when people have seen us complete the trip".

Gooch went on to thank the organiser of the journey, Oxford resident and Stones fan Huw Eggington.

He said: "Huw has done so much to organise this and it really shows his love for Maidstone United, that not only does he regularly travel down to watch matches but has now played a pro-active part in bringing the club back to Maidstone".

Everyone at Maidstone United - and www.kentishfootball.co.uk -  wish Huw Eggington, John Gooch, Matthew Wright and Adrian Sharpe the very best on their trip.
