Bromley provide Rams with a good test

July 2005
Pre-Season Friendly Colin Head reports from Southwood Stadium
Ramsgate 2 Sinden 20, Hill 45
Bromley 2 Drewett 40, Boateng 70

Ramsgate assistant manager, Danny Ward was pleased with the test his side received from the visit of Ryman Premier League side Bromley, writes Stephen McCartney.

In an audio interview on the club's website www.ramsgate-fc.co.uk, Ward said: "Yes, it was a good match.  We played against a team that are a division above us, who have just been promoted from the division we have just gone into, and I think we coped quite well."

And the Scotsman was very impressed with their visitors.  "They are a good team, with a good touch on the ball, and always made space for each other, but they didn't really damage us in many places.

"The two goals we conceded we expect not to conceed again, but accept from that we got the ball down, we passed the ball and we made a lot more chances than they did.

"But we were quite pleased with the fitness of our players and the movement.

"So it was good to play against good players, as our players know what standard they need to get up to."

Ward revealed details of the injury status within their squad, but the Rams are likely to be back to full fitness within two weeks.

Warren Schulz (foot), Ollie Schulz (neck) should return shortly but striker Shaun Welford hurt his shoulder whilst scoring a diving header in the Rams' 3-0 win over Whitstable Town in midweek.

The former Dover Athletic striker is going to hospital for a check up on Wednesday and should return to training a day later.  And big striker, Steffan Ball, who suffered a dead leg in their 2-0 win over Erith & Belvedere last Saturday, should be available for selection in two weeks.

And Colin Head brings us the following match report:

In a very competitive game at Princes Avenue, Bromley came up against a solid Rams' side buoyed by their promotion from the Kent League last season.

Bromley initially made the play with their two new strikers, Nic McDonnell and Henry Darko, but the Rams had the first real chance of the game on 13 minutes, when a low shot just crept wide of the post.

Gary Drewett saw an effort just go wide at the other end before the home side took the lead on 20 minutes, former Maidstone striker Richard Sinden finishing off a nice move with a powerful header.

After a drinks break Bromley took the initiative and put the Ramsgate defender under pressure, they eventually forced an equaliser on 40 minutes when a long throw by Steve Potterill was headed home by Drewett from six yards.

Inside injury time of the first half Ramsgate had one final attack and despite the assistant referee flagging for offside, they were awarded a corner.  Bromley's marking was poor and former Sittingbourne man Dean Hill headed the home side 2-1 in front at the break.

Bromley had the better of the second half creating quite a few chances, but not really showing the vital final touches.

Des Boateng and Adam Locke both looked class in midfield for the Hayes Lane side.

Adolph Amoako headed a corner wide from close range, before the equaliser finally came on 70 minutes.

After some nice passing round the edge of the Rams' penalty area, Boateng seized his opportunity and struck a fierce drive from 20 yards that was too hot for the home goalkeeper to handle.

Logan had a header go just wide shortly after, whilst Ramsgate still looked dangerous on the break.

Late on McDonnell went on a good run and hit a powerful strike from 20 yards, which cannoned off the bar and out of the ground.

Bromley Squad: Ibrahim, Potterill, McLeod, Henriques, Willy, Boateng, Drewett, Locke, McDonnell, Darko, George. Subs: Amoako, Logan, Richardson, Chin, Julius.
