Wood's strike defeats Lords

Lordswood 0-1 Sevenoaks Town
Saturday 6 December 2003
Go Travel Kent League Premier Division
by Darrell Harman

The game started brightly for Lordswood as they carried on from their performance last week and after four minutes a great piece of skill from Mike Cunningham saw him beat three defenders around the penalty spot and his shot went narrowly wide of the post.

However, disaster struck after fourteen minutes when a right wing cross into the area found its way to Dave Wood who unopposed hooked in from eight yards.

The game became a struggle for both teams with the strong wind not helping matters.  Sevenoaks, who joined the Go Travel Kent League this season, almost increased their lead after 29 minutes when a cross from the left saw former Tunbridge Wells player Wayne Balmer ghost in and his header went past the post.

Lordswood picked up the pace early in the second half, and within six minutes Andy Freeman's flag kick found John Gissing whose header was saved by Darren Smart.

Just past the hour mark, Lordswood should have equalised when substitute James Short flicked the ball on for Glen Barlow and after beating the defender he went into the penalty area but his weak chip was comfortably gathered by Smart in the Sevenoaks goal.

Lordswood's luck ran out after 64 minutes when Freeman on the left beat the full back and crossed to Barlow whose shot came back off the post.

With the home side attacking in numbers, the visitors broke away and should have increased their lead when the ball was played across the  area for Richard Kennedy unmarked from close range but he dwelled on the ball allowing Lordswood to clear.

Lordswood pressed for the equaliser and with only eight minutes remaining Neil Crust received the ball from Freeman's free kick and his 20 yard shot deflected for a corner.

Barlow blasted over the bar with time ticking out and as the final whistle sounded the home side reflected on their many missed chances and the need for an out and out hit man.
