Cray made to work for their win over Sevenoaks
Cray Wanderers 2-0 Sevenoaks Town
Go Travel Kent League Premier Division
Saturday 20 September 2003
Report by Jerry Dowlen
Some good goals will no doubt be scored at Hayes Lane this
season, but it will need something special to be a better one than Jamie
Wood's net-bursting shot that gave Cray the lead against Sevenoaks Town.
Visiting goalkeeper Darren Smart had saved a bullet header from
the Cray striker a few minutes earlier, but he was powerless to stop Wood's
16th minute cracker that flew inside the near post and was followed up by the
scorer's trademark celebration of a double cartwheel.
In truth, it needed some inspiration from Cray to overcome an
improved visiting side who defended stubbornly and gave the Wands a much
harder work-out than the 3-0 stroll enjoyed at Greatness Park when the two
teams met in August.
The face that defender Ian Rawlings was voted Man of the Match
will testify to Sevenoaks' battling performance that brought the game
eventually to a dour midfield slog, after the Wands had most of the running on
the first thirty minutes.
Ricky Bennnett touched in Cray's second goal with just five
minutes remaining, to keep the Wands in second place in the table.
Meanwhile, Cray Wanderers are running a coach to their FA Cup
Second Qualifying Round tie at Ryman League Premier Division side Basingstoke
Town next Saturday (27th) The coach departs their Oxford Road base in Sidcup
at 11.00am.
