Youthful looking Cray strike early as Sandhurst hit the rocks
Cray Wanderers 4-1 Sandhurst Town
FA Cup First Qualifying Round
Saturday 13 September 2003
by Jerry Dowlen
A combination of FA Cup fever and September sunshine brought a
large crowd to Hayes Lane to see another super-show by the Wands.
Player-manager Ian Jenkins has not been afraid to give youth
its chance this season. His starting line-up on Saturday included Paul
Dimmock, Ross Lover and Sam Wood, all of whom caught the eye as Cray overran
their opponents and created a new club record of winning through three rounds
of the FA Cup for the first time ever in any one season.
It was veteran Ricky Bennett who netted Cray's opener in just
13 seconds, and then only a minute later the Wands were two-nil up when Lover
stabbed home after the goalkeeper dropped Dimmock's cross.
Bennett scored again on 31 minutes, from a cross by Lover, and
although Sandhurst pulled a goal back from Grant Nesbitt on 41 minutes, it
remained largely one-way traffic in the second half as the Wands continued to
dominate.
Jamie Kempster brought the house down after 56 minutes when his
35 yard snap shot flew high into the net with Durrant rooted to his line.
It was Cray's thirteenth goal in their FA Cup campaign this
season.
