Stevens returns to lead out Beckenham

IN 1950 a young, and until recently unknown, mascot lead out Beckenham Town's side at their former ground in Stanhope Grove, against a visiting Dutch team, writes Stephen McCartney.

That Beckenham side included a very youthful full-back called Alf Silver, who had recently been signed from Kent County League side Churchfield Old Boys.

Tomorrow, some 54-years-later, Beckenham Town entertain Jim Ward's Ramsgate in a Go Travel Kent League match at Beckenham's current ground in Eden Park Avenue.

To mark the opening of Beckenham's new pitch the side will again be lead out by Chas Stevens, that same, now not so young, mascot.

It's a nice idea especially as Alf Silver, a long time Beckenham supporter,  will be there to watch Stevens lead out the side.
