Margate goalkeeper jumps ship to Crawley

KENT crisis club Margate have lost their goalkeeper Phil Smith to ambitious newly promoted Nationwide Conference side Crawley Town.

Smith made his Crawley debut a week ago having featured in the starting line-up against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 24-year-old began his career at Millwall as a trainee and after graduating from the youth team got his first team break in 1999.

However, after making five appearances, his performances started to slip and he was sent out on loan to Ashford Town the following season.

He moved across Kent to Dover Athletic then on to Margate in July 2002, where he spent the last two seasons and was ever-present for the then Conference side in season 2003-2004.

He has also one international cap having played for the England National Game side that played Belgium.
