Shearer becomes Wings' eighth summer signing

Adrian Pennock, manager of Nationwide South club Welling United, has made experienced defender Lee Shearer his eighth summer signing.

The 27-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Wings, although they are awaiting international clearance for the player.

Shearer worked with Pennock at Nationwide Conference club Gravesend & Northfleet last season and is seen as an ideal replacement for Jamie Smith, 19, who ironically, has moved in the opposite direction.

A former England Schoolboy international, until the summer of 1998 Shearer was on the books at Leyton Orient.

He signed for Margate from Dover Athletic in June 2002 and then switched to Kent rivals Gravesend & Northfleet in July 2003.

An accomplished central defender, Shearer spent past of last season on-loan back at Dover Athletic and was released by Fleet last December when he was linked with a move to King's Lynn - the Southern Premier League club being managed by Shearer's former Orient boss Tommy Taylor.

However, instead he headed off to Holland, playing for RKSV Leonidas.
